Moissanite vs. Lab-Grown Diamond: An Honest Side-by-Side

If you're shopping for a ring that sparkles like a diamond without the diamond price, you've probably landed on the same two names: moissanite and lab-grown diamond. They look similar in photos, they're both real gemstones, and both cost far less than a mined diamond. But they are not the same stone — and the differences matter for how your ring looks, wears, and what you'll pay.

The 30-second version

A lab-grown diamond is a diamond — pure carbon, grown in a lab instead of mined from the earth. Same chemistry, same hardness, same sparkle type as a mined diamond.

Moissanite is a different gemstone entirely — silicon carbide. It's nearly as hard as diamond, actually throws more rainbow fire than diamond, and costs a fraction of even a lab diamond's price.

Side by side

Moissanite Lab-Grown Diamond
What it is Silicon carbide (SiC) Pure carbon — a real diamond
Hardness (Mohs) 9.25 10
Fire (rainbow flashes) Very high — dispersion 0.104 Moderate — dispersion 0.044
Brilliance (white sparkle) Very high — refractive index 2.65–2.69 High — refractive index 2.42
Color Near-colorless; can show a slight warm or green tint in some light Graded exactly like mined diamonds (D–Z)
Diamond tester Often reads as "diamond" on basic thermal testers Is a diamond — tests as one on every tester
Typical price Lowest of the three — often a tenth of a comparable lab diamond or less Roughly 60–85% less than a mined diamond, but far more than moissanite

Sparkle: the difference you can actually see

This is the one real trade-off. Moissanite has more than twice the fire of a diamond, which means it throws bigger rainbow flashes, especially in sunlight and under bright store lighting. Some people love that — it's the most common reason our customers pick moissanite. Others prefer the whiter, crisper sparkle of a diamond and find moissanite's fire a little "disco ball."

Neither is better. It's a taste question. If you want maximum sparkle per dollar and you like a stone that comes alive in the sun, moissanite wins. If you want the classic diamond look exactly, a lab diamond is the faithful copy.

Durability: both are everyday stones

Diamond is the hardest material on Earth at 10 on the Mohs scale. Moissanite at 9.25 is the second-hardest gemstone commonly used in jewelry — harder than sapphire or ruby. For a ring you wear every day, both are genuinely durable choices. This is the big gap between these two stones and cheaper alternatives like cubic zirconia (8–8.5, and prone to clouding over time).

So which one should you buy?

Choose moissanite if you want the biggest, brightest stone your budget allows, you love rainbow fire, and you'd rather put the savings toward the wedding, the honeymoon, or literally anything else.

Choose a lab-grown diamond if the stone being a diamond matters to you — the chemistry, the grading certificate, the traditional look — and your budget stretches to it.

What you shouldn't do is pay mined-diamond prices in 2026 without at least comparing. Both of these stones exist because the technology got good enough that most people can't tell them apart from a mined diamond without tools.
