Moissanite is one of the easiest gemstones to maintain — 9.25 hardness, no special equipment, nothing you don't already have in your kitchen. Here's the routine we give every customer, plus the honest list of what to avoid. (If your stone is looking dull right now, it's almost certainly surface film, not damage — see Does Moissanite Get Cloudy Over Time?)
The standard clean (5 minutes)
- Fill a small bowl with warm water and a drop or two of mild dish soap.
- Soak the piece for about 5 minutes. Heavily filmed pieces can go 15–20 minutes.
- Scrub gently with a soft-bristle toothbrush — top, sides, and especially under the stone, where lotion and oil collect and block light.
- Rinse under warm running water. (Close the drain first. Seriously.)
- Pat dry with a lint-free or microfiber cloth. Air-dry fully before storing.
That's the whole process for rings like our D Color Moissanite Solitaire Ring and for chains and bracelets too — a tennis bracelet like the Square Moissanite Tennis Bracelet benefits from a gentle brush along each link so film doesn't build up between stones.
Cleaning the silver, not just the stone
Our pieces are set in 925 sterling silver, and silver has its own maintenance note: it tarnishes slowly when exposed to air and moisture. That's normal chemistry, not a defect. A standard silver polishing cloth restores the shine in under a minute. Store pieces dry, ideally in a pouch or closed box, and they'll need polishing far less often. What to avoid
- Harsh chemicals on the setting: moissanite itself is extremely chemical-resistant, but bleach, chlorine, and strong cleaners can damage or discolor silver. Take jewelry off before pools and hot tubs.
- Abrasive powders and stiff brushes: they won't hurt the stone, but they can scratch silver and wear down plating and prongs over time.
- Steam and ultrasonic cleaners, with a caveat: the stone handles them fine, but vibration and steam can loosen a stone in an already-worn setting. If a stone feels loose, skip the machines and get the setting checked — hand-cleaning is always safe.
- Paper towels: they shed fibers and can leave micro-scratches on polished silver. Use a soft cloth.
How often?
For a ring you wear daily, a quick soak every one to two weeks keeps it at full fire — moissanite picks up oils a bit faster than diamond, so it rewards the routine. Occasional pieces just need a clean when they look flat and a polish when the silver dulls. That's the entire maintenance commitment, and it's why we also cover the basics in our shorter How to Care for Moissanite Jewelry overview.
The bottom line
Warm water, mild soap, soft brush, soft cloth. Do that regularly and a moissanite piece — ring, chain, bracelet, or studs — keeps the exact sparkle it had on day one. No jeweler visits, no special products, no fine print.
